There are six stages that most online businesses go through when the person starting them is doing it all on their own without a massive investment of venture capital. These stages are ideation. What are we going to do? What’s possible? Then they move into weekend warrior because they have a nine to five and so they start working on this on the evenings and weekends. And then it reaches the point where they’re ready to go all in. They leave the nine to five. This is their thing. At this stage, they start to become or could start to become a team builder where they start utilizing the talents and skills. skills of others. Now, if they choose to be a real business and grow and become something valuable, they move into what I call C-suite. This is where they start elevating other people to be leaders around them. And then finally, they can move into legacy. Now, my question for you is, at which stage does this person need to be an adult and craft a vision, mission, and core values? I mean, we all hear about vision, mission, and core values. It’s something that corporations have and companies have. But when do we need to do it? When do I need to create this core document? For my company. And when I know when to do it, how do I even go about approaching it? Well, in today’s episode, you’ll discover the ins and outs of vision, mission, and core values, and how to use them to To build a business that otherwise will not grow or scale. That’s right. You have to have. Vision, mission, and core values if you want a business to grow and scale. And I’ll explain why here in just a few minutes. Welcome to the podcast, everybody. My name is Eric Dingler. I am a full-time traveling digital nomad moving around the world with my wife and our four kids. Whether they choose to travel full time, part time, or just Decide to, I’m gonna, you know, I, I just, I’m gonna work in this cafe today and I’m gonna work in the library tomorrow and I’m gonna work in that coffee shop next week, whatever location independent looks like. For you, we are passionate about helping you get there. Now, I contribute to that through this right here, the Digital Nomad Entrepreneur podcast. The digital nomad family podcast where she talks about the personal side of this lifestyle, the family side of this lifestyle. Now, in today’s episode, what I wanna do is I wanna talk about when, what, Why and how to create your vision, mission, and core values. So that’s the first thing we’re gonna do. Then, as always, I’m going to share a leadership tip of the week. And the reason I do that, if you’re new, To the podcast, welcome. And, uh, what you’re going to discover as you continue to listen is I wrap up every single episode with a leadership tip of the week because you’re Your leadership capacity is the capacity of your business. No business ever outgrows leadership. And so, uh, I, I am just, I love leadership. It’s my favorite topic to talk about. I want to equip you with a leadership nugget every opportunity I get. So I’m going to wrap up today’s podcast with that. And then third, for those of you interested in the travel side of things, I’ll be wrapping up with a quick travel update. So with that, let’s go ahead and jump into the first part of today’s episode, the when, what, why, and how of vision, mission, and core values. Okay, so before I clearly define the what, what is a vision, what is a mission, what is a core value and unpack that real quickly for you. The question, the first question I answer is when is the right time to get this? Is it when you have other leaders and you can go on a retreat and you can Hash this out over three days and come back from the retreat excited, engaged, and have new slogans and, you know, have your creative team come up with Uh, taglines and swag for your company and put it on coffee mugs and, you know, just get everybody riled up about it. Uh, is, is that the right time? Do you need this before you even get started? Well, the answer to when do you need to craft your vision, mission, and core values is right now. Right now, it doesn’t matter what stage of business you’re in. If you do not have a vision, mission, core value statement, a document, I call it a guiding document. You need to do that right now. This has got to be your next priority. That rhymed. So you didn’t know you were going to start listening to a podcast where the host rhymes, but from time to time, I do. Okay. I was going to try to rhyme there, but I figured that would be too much. So the right time for you to get a vision mission core value crafted is right now. Now, you know, what is the vision mission core value? I want to unpack that and then I’m going to go to why. Now you might be thinking, well, why? Why right now? Why do I need it? I think when you understand what these are, when I explain the why it’s going to make a little more sense to do it in this, this order. So. What is vision mission core values? What do I mean by this? Well, uh, I’m going to give you a quick, um, You know, let’s see, like four or five word description of each one. And then I’m going to paint a word picture for you. So your vision is where you’re going. All right. The vision is a picture of a preferred future. Another, uh, leadership person once said, I don’t know who, or I tell you the name. I’m not trying to be, you know. Weird about it. I just don’t remember which leadership guru I heard that from. But vision is a picture of a preferred future. It’s where you’re going. It’s where you can clearly point and say that is the direction we’re headed. So vision is where you’re going. Mission is what you’re going to do to get there. How are you going to get to that destination? And the core values is… Um, how the experience everyone has is going along. So vision, where are we going? Mission, what we do to get there, uh, core values, how we get there. So, let me paint a word picture for you if I can. You could say, you could say, we are going to the top of that mountain. Or you could say, we’re going to the depths of the ocean. All right, so you can pick one of those two places. And right now, if you’re curious, I have my right finger pointing way up high and my left pointing way down low. Why I’m actually pantomiming this out in a little office space in my co-working area where nobody can see me, I do not know. But I am. You can picture that. All right. So you could say I’m going way up there to the top of that mountain. That’s where my company is going. We see a future where we are up there. Or we see a picture where we are, um, living in the depths of the ocean. Where we have conquered and we have discovered and we are set up down there. So that’s, that’s the vision. That’s the vision. And in the nonprofit world, you know, a vision maybe we see a world where there is, uh, where everyone has clean water to drink. Okay. We see a world where everyone has clean water to drink. In a business, you know, for example, for my agency, we see a world full of successful and generous business owners. Giving to non-profits and or missionaries who are working to eliminate human suffering here, there, and everywhere. That’s what we, that’s where we’re going as a company. In the future, we want to be impacting other businesses so they have margin as well, not just us, But that they have margin and that we have somehow been able to motivate them to be generous, radically generous and partner with nonprofits and missionaries so that together we are, um, Uh, collecting and, and, um, applying our resources to eliminate human suffering around the world or the way I say it is here. There and everywhere here in my backyard there on and that part of my country and everywhere over there in the other part of the world. You see, that’s my vision for my company. That’s where we are heading. So I could go to the top of that mountain. I could go to the bottom of the sea. The mission is the vehicle we’re going to use to get there. Okay. So to get to the top of the mountain, am I going to take a hot air balloon or am I going to take a four by four vehicle? You see, both will get me up there and others are going towards the top of that hill and I can take the same route they’re going. I can take the same type of vehicle or I could take something different. A mission is your vehicle. A mission is your vehicle. Now your vehicle may need to change from time to time. Andy Stanley says that we marry the vision, but we date the mission. And so we’re married to our vision. It’s not changing. This is where we’re going. This is my stake in the ground. I’m going to conquer that mountain. I’m gonna conquer the depths of the sea. And how we’re gonna get there for a season, we may use this type of vehicle, but then we may have to change. New vehicles emerge, new technologies come out. Maybe a vehicle can only one, maybe a certain type of vehicle can only get us so far. You know, we can take a boat out into the water, but then at some point we need to transition into a submarine. And so right now my mission is this thing. We do this. We get there by this means. Now your core value is how you’re getting there. The experience inside the vehicle. All right. Is everybody helping drive? Do people take turns? Um, You know, is it, you know, rock and roll music? Is it classical music? You know? Is it, is it important to you that along the way others get invited into the vehicle? Um, is it important that as you’re going, maybe you’re learning, maybe you’re listening to audio books, like What do you value? What’s important for you inside the vehicle? Is, is, is quality important? Is, is excellence important? Um, can, you know, what is it, what does that Look like to you. What is, what is important to you? It’s the experience that your people are having inside your vehicle. So this is vision, mission, and core values. You need to figure this out right now. Now is the time to work on it. And what they are is it’s a picture of a preferred future. It is your, this is where we’re going. This is what we’re going to do to get there. And this is how we’re going to experience the journey. Now, why? Why do you need this? Well, it’s very simple. Vision, mission, and core values gives you clarity. And clarity yields focus. Clarity yields focus. These are your guiding documents. This is something you’re gonna come back to over and over and over regularly. In fact, For the, um, the, the longest time I read these statements for my company daily, every single day. I read them every single day until they just became part of my DNA. Until they were just absorbed into me. And I’m talking for like a year and a half. I read our vision, mission, core values every single day and there are times that I have to spend a few weeks re-engaging with them because of and I’ll share the leadership tip Here that addresses why I had to do that. So as you do this, when you clearly understand the direction you’re headed, it’s so much easier to have clarity on, um, not getting sidetracked off of a, of a route. Or if a detour pops up, you have clarity to get around it, to go over it. Like, it’s just, you’re gonna know what to say no to, which is the most, uh, powerful tool in a leader’s toolbox, in my opinion, is knowing what to say no to and having the willpower to do that. But that comes from clarity. Clarity yields focus. One of the things, if you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, if you’ve been following me, you know I talk a lot about Some of my favorite frameworks, OP3, Core five and OP3 is the persona, the product, and the pathway. Who are we selling to? What’s the problem we’re solving and who are we solving it for? That’s Persona. Product, what’s the thing we sell? What’s our widget that solves that? And then pathway, how do people buy it? How do people buy this thing? That’s OP3. It is foundational for you to have business. You know how you get clarity on your OP3? Vision, mission, core values. When you know where you’re headed, you can look at that and say, okay, um, this is where we’re going. So, um, To get there, who are we taking with us? Who are we doing this for? Who is the person, the problem we’re solving to make that future a reality? Like, that’s the, that’s where this, why this is so important. Vision, mission, core values. This gives clarity. Clarity yields focus. Clarity yields focus. Now listen to this. Focus yields action. When you have clarity, Of knowing who you are, what you’re doing, how you’re gonna do it. Now, You’re able to focus on and because you’re not trying to figure things out. You’re not jumping from one idea to the next one tactic to the next. You’re not. I’m not trying this. I’m not trying that. I’m not. You’re not stressed because things aren’t working and you don’t know what to do. And so you’re going to start to eliminate this stress. You’re going to have clarity. You’re going to focus and focus yields action because now you know what to do. I’ve got focus on what I need to work on. And now I know that I can take these actions. These are the actions I need to take to fix this. Because clarity yields focus. Focus yields action and action yields results. The equation would sound like this clarity of focus plus right actions. Okay. So you have clarity of focus plus taking right actions over time. Clarity of focus plus right actions over time equals business growth. This is the equation for business growth. Clarity of focus plus taking the right actions and doing this over time. Doing it over and over. Consistently showing up with focus on what we’re going to do. Saying no to the things that are getting in my way. Taking the right actions because I’ve got focus on what I need to do. I’m on a mission. I’m on vision. I know how to do this because I’ve got values that are guiding me. You will have business growth. It is impossible. For this equation not to work. It is impossible for this equation not to work. So why do you need vision mission core values? Because you want your business to grow. Because clarity of focus plus right actions over time equals business growth. So how do you get this? How do you get a clear vision, mission, and core values? Well, The, the, um, kind of the, the overarching, um, big picture of this is, uh, it takes a little bit of time. And that’s okay. You don’t have to be in a rush. You don’t have to be in a rush. Vision is probably going to take you the longest and that’s okay. Um, and, and so yeah, just be first, give yourself permission to, Take a breath and to work on this. Okay. That’s, that’s step one. So step two is start with your vision and, and write down on a piece of paper. I see a future where. And then just start writing, start doodling. Do not worry about wordsmithing this. Do not make worry about making it sound clever and cute and a tagline. Don’t try to picture it on a t-shirt and a coffee mug. And signs hanging up on your business. Don’t worry about how do I make this so it’s a rally cry and people will come alongside. You’re nowhere near that. Right now, you’re just capturing. You’re whittling things down. You’re going to, um, you know, take all of this. You’re going to, uh, put it in the furnace over time. And it’s going to be refined. And it’s just, it just is a process. I see a future where? And just write. Don’t edit. Just write. Dream a little bit. This is okay. I’ve seen people start this process and create vision boards. You know, where they cut out pictures of things and, and, and stuff like that. And they’ve got visions and all these things, you know, pictures of, of, You know, vacation spots and pictures of, um, destinations, pictures of groups of people, pictures of outcomes and things. And just like they have this vision board and that that’s good. But that’s just the first step. Most people stop there and they think because they’ve made a collage, they’ve done an art project, they think, oh, I’ve got a vision. No, you don’t. You have a bunch of ideas and you don’t have clarity, okay? You have a dream board. A vision is gonna take time to whittle that down and to do the work. But here’s the thing, if you’re not willing To give the time it takes to craft a compelling vision, then what makes you think you’re willing to do what it takes over the long haul to have a successful business? If you’re not willing to work on your business an hour a week, or if you’re, if you’re all in, if you’re in the all in stage and you’re not willing to work on your business an hour a day, Get out. Because I’m telling you right now, if you’re not willing to work on your business an hour a day, if you’re, if you are all in, if this is your nine to five, your soul thing, And it is all on you. If you’re not willing to work on your business an hour a day, are you really willing to work on it for the years it’s going to take to make this thing work? Like what’s, you have to question your commitment level. Really? And I think you can do this. I think you want to do this. You just need somebody to give you permission. And I’m telling you, I’m giving you the permission to do it. Set up a time, change of pace, change of place. Go work on this, you know, and maybe it’s not an hour a day. Go work on this somewhere for, you know, five hours. A week, that’d be an hour a day. You know, go give it five hours. I like, I mean, I think this is a great activity to do when you’re fresh in the morning and if you’re a coffee drinker, you got that cup of coffee and you’re sitting there at the kitchen table and And you got up a little earlier cause you want to work on this and you’re just dreaming. You’re just dreaming. Where, where is my business going to be forty years from now, fifty years from now, sixty years, a hundred years. What’s the big problem I want to solve in the world? What is not okay on your watch? What is not okay on your watch? What are you like? This is just unacceptable to me. This is where you start to find your vision. Then you move into mission. Okay. I mean, I’m the mission. What’s the vehicle I’m going to take to get there. So you’re going to write down this equation. I help blank. Achieve blank by doing blank. All right. I help. This group of people, I help this type of organization, I help X achieve this outcome. By providing this service by doing this thing. Now this isn’t wordsmith. Exactly. You’re just starting to try to figure out, okay, I know where I’m headed. So how am I going to get, you know, what am I going to do to get there? What am I going to do to get there? All right. What, what, what is the thing I’m doing? And this may change over time. Maybe right now it’s copywriting. Maybe, maybe you are sick and tired of seeing business owners waste time and resources by putting out emails and social media content that you read and you’re like, oh my gosh. That’s not gonna get any results for you. And then you’re gonna think that this doesn’t work and you’re not gonna be any better off tomorrow than you are today because your copy sucks. And so you see a future where copywriting is so easy that every business is able to put out amazing copy every single time. I don’t know. Maybe that’s your vision. So you help solo business owners that can’t afford to hire a copywriter achieve amazing results from every piece of copy By coaching them through a course. Maybe that’s your mission. See, this doesn’t have to be words. Well, you wordsmith it later. You make it sound nice and pretty later. Don’t worry about that right now. Just what are you doing? What are you doing? And, and, and you’re going to know this is going to start to work itself out as you work on this. It’s going to take time. And then finally, your core values, your core values are excited for this. Tell me what I’m having fun with this. I love this topic. And I, I’m telling you right now, I’m going to, I’m going to, before I talk about core values, I want you to know, I want to help you with this. I want to help you with this. And so. Let’s do this. Do yourself a favor. Let’s connect up in a way that you can get some support on this. And here’s how you can do it. I want you to go to community.com. community.dnepodcast.com community.dnepodcast digitalnomadentrepreneurpodcast.com dnepodcast That’s the website. You have to wait for me to accept you. I don’t just let anybody in this. Okay. Because I’m not going to let people in there that are spammy and, and jerks. This isn’t an open thing. Um, and I will answer those questions. Others in the community may answer the questions. It’s totally free. There’s no charge. For this. All right. It’s just come in, have a place to ask questions, have a place to ask questions. All right. So, um, if you want to get feedback on your vision, mission, core values, This is a way for you to do that. All right. I was just taking a drink of tea there. It’s delicious. All right. Core values. These are the things you value. These are, um, You know, statements, it’s, it’s really up to you. These are kind of probably cover things like, you know, quality. Um, maybe, maybe you really value the triple check. Okay. You know, we, I value the triple check. Somebody’s like triple check. What’s that? It means everything gets checked three times. I don’t know. I’m just making that up. I’ve never heard anybody use that as a core value, but maybe you can. We, you know, I value the triple check, the double check, the quadruple check, whatever that is. You know, what is it you value? Now, these kind of tend to be around, um, Well, they really vary. I was about to give you some very specific examples, but as I started picturing it quickly, the core values of other companies, I realized these are all over the places. Um, yeah, Dave Ramsey at the Entree, uh, at the Ramsey Solutions, one of their core values is, is, is clarity. And they say clarity. To be unclear is to be unkind. It’s really their core value on communication. For my agency, we have communicate on a cadence. That’s one of our core values, um, communicate on a cadence. This means that we don’t wait. To communicate when somebody asks a question, we are, we look for ways to proactively communicate. We look for ways to communicate on a consistent regular basis. Um, One of our core values is systematize for success. All right. And so as I talk about this with my team, I regularly talk about this. We’re constantly working on our, our systems. I value systems because in business, it’s never a people problem. It’s always a systems problem. I don’t have people problems. I have system problems. And so as I work on my systems, I eliminate problems. So we systematize for success. That’s one of our core values. So you’ve got to decide what is valuable and important to you. And these will change over time. You, you’re going to want three to seven of these, you know, you’re going to want three to seven. Um, But you can get those and these take times and these evolve probably more than mission. You’re gonna edit your core values a little more frequently and then mission, but vision will one day be your stone tablet. It’ll be the thing that the vision can’t change because then your business will end. Or if your vision, if you reach your vision, it’s the end of your business. You’re done. And, and that’s okay. That’s the point of what you’re doing. All right. So. Vision, mission, core values. You need these because clarity yields focus. Focus yields actions and actions yield results because the equation for business Clarity of focus plus right actions over time equals business growth. All right, my friend. Well, that is the when, what, why, and how of vision, mission, core value. That was fun. That was a lot. Now I’m going to get into this week’s leadership tip of the week and travel update, but I’d like you to do me a favor. If you just heard anything there that charged you up, If you just heard anything there that gave you clarity, maybe you just learned how to, for the first time, understand the difference between vision and mission. A lot of people get, like, are confused, like, what’s a vision, what’s a mission? A vision, that’s the picture of my preferred future. The mission is, is, is the vehicle we’re taking to get there. Okay. I’m, I’m, I’m going to take a four by four vehicle to the top of that mountain. And along the way, we’re going to listen to podcasts and audiobooks to learn. We’re going to stop as we see others struggling and help them along the way. Everybody’s gonna get up there. Emotionally, physically, and spiritually healthy. Like these are the things I value. I value the team getting up there together. We’re in the vehicle together. The vehicle is clean. We do routine maintenance. On the vehicle. We don’t, we don’t fix it when it breaks down. We fix it before it breaks down. We always have spare parts. You know, we really take care of that. And one day we’re going to reach that impossible mountain peak that right now everybody says is impossible to get to. That’s your company’s vision, mission, core values. Or it could be we’re going to the depths of the ocean and we’re going to take a submarine to get there. And right now this submarine doesn’t exist. The technology doesn’t even exist. We’re going to create the technology. It takes to get us safely to the abyss of the ocean where we can live in comfort and harmony. And we can move around in a clean underwater, uh, uh, environment surrounded by the technology that keeps us safe. And we’re gonna make sure that everybody is kept safe. We’re gonna value safety first. We’re gonna value creativity. We’re not going to be locked into using solutions that are already there. We’re going to create solutions where none exist. We value innovation. Excuse me. You see the two stories here? How they’re two completely different stories? And, and those, they’re both great stories. What’s your story? What is your vision, mission, core value? If you’ve, if you’re listening, you’re like, wow, I never have thought, I never heard it that way. I never thought it this way. Here’s what I need you to do. I would like for you to leave a review, to be honest. In exchange for putting the time into clarifying this, putting this out there, recording it, and giving it to you. For free because I want you to have it. I want you to use this and I want you to reach your, your dreams. I want you to have the life you’re trying to build. And, and I know that vision, mission, core values helps do that. Would you do me the favor and leave a review on the podcast? If you’re listening in Apple, leave an Apple review. If you’re listening on Spotify, you know, subscribe, comment on this episode. Leave a comment on this episode. You know, and if you’re like, my gosh, this was really great stuff. Share it. Share it with somebody. Post it on social media. Say, wow, I just, in fact, here’s a cool way to share this. Um, go to pod.link. Go to pod.link. So just start typing in digital nomad entrepreneur. It’ll pop up, click on it. And it’s going to give you a link that you can share on social media that will have all the different ways for the, it’ll be the Spotify link, the Apple link, the Amazon link, Link, the iHeartRadio link, all right there. All pulled together for you. It’s a really great way to share this. So if you, man, would you do that? Just share it on social media. Um, if, uh, tag me, make sure that we’re connected. And just to let people know this right here, listen to this episode. It’s about vision, mission, core values, why you need it in your business. Um, I tell you, that would mean the world to me if you would do that. So that’s what I’m asking of you to do for me. And I would really appreciate that. Now, leadership tip of the week. Here’s something you need to know when it comes to being a great leader. Vision leaks. You see, once you get this crafted, your vision, mission, and core values, vision leaks. This is why I spent so much time Um, you know, you know, months and months and months daily reading my vision, mission and core values. And now every so often, once or twice a year, I have to spend, uh, several weeks rereading through them every single morning because vision leaks. And now because I’m in team builder, uh, Um, and working towards C-suite, I have to embody this into my team. And so every week I send a video to my team, uh, on one of our values. Or, or reminding them about our vision, our mission. And so vision leaks, you have to keep this in front of you. You have to keep this in front of you at all times. You can’t just write this and then move on to the next thing. Writing it is not the solution. Implementing it is. Breathing it in. Having it become your DNA. That is the key. This has to become every part of you. That’s how you make this work for you. I don’t want you to write a vision, mission, core values. I want you to embody your vision, mission, core values. I want you to embody it, live it out, embrace it. I want it to become the thing that is your heartbeat of your organization, of your business. So, vision leaks. Vision leaks. That’s this week’s leadership tip of the week. Remember it. Prevent it. Now, for those of you that are interested on the travel side of our lifestyle, um, If you’ve been listening, uh, I remember when I was recording this in Costa Rica, I, I think I gave plans that we were headed to Spain and then that changed and we never went to Spain. We ended up going to Argentina and, and, uh, Uh, Chile and, and more of South America. Um, and, uh, I think not too long ago, I said, you know, we’re going to be here in Liverpool for two months. Well, that’s now four months. So we’ve decided to extend our stay. It’s just how we’re comfortable living location independent when, um, we’ll extend our stay. We’ll cut it, you know, we’ll, we’ll get out when we say we don’t really cut it short cause I’m too cheap to lose rent. Um, I would have to have a cancellation policy that gave me my money back. So I’m, I’m, we’re not cut it short. But we’ve, you know, we’ve either left when we said we were going to, um, or a couple of times, not often, but a couple of times we extend our stay and we’ve extended it. Now you might be thinking, wow, is Liverpool that great? Maybe, maybe, but it’s not why we extended our stay. To be honest, we extended our stay because we just couldn’t afford anywhere else we found. Like we looked at other places and our rent was going to double here. I mean, it was going to be over $4,000 a month and that is just outside of what we budget for our rent. And, and housing expenses. Uh, so we decided to give ourselves a little more time to be on the hunt and the look for an apartment. So we’ve extended our stay here two more months.
